Jobby was born out of a need we experienced firsthand. We are a team from Acapulco, a vibrant city that relies almost entirely on tourism. In 2023, when Hurricane Otis struck our city, it left devastation in its wake: hotels and businesses closed, thousands of families lost their income, and tourism—the backbone of the local economy—came to a standstill for over six months.
However, something caught our attention: while many people lost their jobs in sectors like hospitality and gastronomy, they found new ways to generate income in operational jobs. Dishwashers, waiters, and maintenance staff began performing cleaning and reconstruction tasks, showing skills they didn’t even know they had. The hurricane taught us that we are capable of adapting, learning, and doing work that previously seemed out of our reach.
Despite the collective effort, the reconstruction highlighted another major issue: although the government offered financial support, there wasn’t enough labor to carry out the necessary work. Companies from all over Mexico came to help, but the lack of an efficient system to connect employers with willing workers slowed down the process. That’s when we realized: there is a gap in how operational talent is connected with available opportunities.
Mexico's labor market urgently needs transformation. 75% of employers identify their biggest challenge as the lack of staff (COPARMEX, 2023). Meanwhile, 74% of workers are seeking better opportunities, even while employed (OCC Mundial, 2023). It’s alarming that 49% of workers lack the proper qualifications for available jobs, leaving a vast potential untapped (OECD, 2018). This challenge is particularly pronounced in operational roles, which dominate the workforce and suffer from extremely high turnover rates throughout the year.
In Mexico, there are around 15 million vacancies in operational jobs every year. By closing the gap between workers' skills and the available opportunities, we can unlock the true potential of our workforce and transform the future of work in the country. It’s time to shape a system that recognizes and connects workers’ skills with the opportunities that truly need them.
At Jobby, our mission is to create an ecosystem that connects workers with real opportunities to enhance their skills and enables employers to fill vacancies efficiently and without high costs.
To be the ultimate ecosystem that redefines the operational labor market, empowering workers to discover and leverage their skills, access nearby opportunities, and make informed career decisions, while efficiently and accessibly connecting employers with the right talent.
